James Burleigh (1828-1885) was a farmer and maltster who lived with his family  in Carmelstead, Carmel Street. He farmed 105 acres with seven labourers. He banked with Gibson’s Bank, Saffron Walden and the book covers the period 1862-1873. It records payments to his farm labourers and shows him to be relatively well off with balances averaging £800 – £1000.
